Types of Programs

The University of Illinois strives to partner with universities and organizations that will give Grainger Engineering students valuable skills, experiences, and gain a global perspective. To best accommodate all students, there are several types of programs of varying lengths offered by Illinois. They include Exchange Programs, Direct Enroll Programs, Provider Programs, and Short-Term/Faculty-Led Programs. Information on the program types is available on the Education Abroad website.

Search and Apply to Programs

"My Study Abroad" contains information and applications for all programs offered through IPENG and other Illinois Education Abroad offices. Each program has their own brochure and application. Multiple parameters can be used in the Program Search function to narrow down programs.

Semester Abroad

Students can spend a semester (or academic year) abroad studying at one of our international partners. All IPENG programs offer technical coursework and students can earn academic credit for major requirements, general education courses, or free electives while abroad.

Summer Abroad

IPENG offers a variety of international programs for students to participate in over the summer. Students can choose from coursework, research, or internship options. IPENG summer programs will begin with "Summer ENGR:" in My Study Abroad

Research Abroad

IPENG offers Global Research Scholars Programs over the summer that allow students to have hands on research experience with one of our international partner institutions. These programs vary in eligibility but there are programs available starting the summer after the first year of college completed.

Short-Term Faculty-Led

Illinois faculty members lead short term study abroad programs over winter, spring, and summer breaks. Students enroll in a class that meets during the semester at Illinois and then travel together as a class to complete the educational program. Programs through IPENG will include "ENGR Faculty-Led".

International Internships

IPENG offers a variety of different opportunities to participate in an international internship. There are programs available in the summer and semester long. Some programs are full time internships, while others pair a part-time internship with academic courses. Refer to program brochures for specifics.
