Scholarships
You may be eligible for scholarships through the University of Illinois and external sources. Below are recommended scholarships for Grainger Engineering Students. Additional information on scholarships is available on the Illinois Education Abroad website.
Note that scholarship application deadlines often fall before or on the same day as program application deadlines. Be sure to research and apply for scholarships as early as possible.
Grainger Engineering International Scholarship
There are several scholarship opportunities for Grainger Engineering students when they participate in programs abroad and complete coursework, engage in research, or participate in a non-paid internship. There is one-shared application for all Grainger Engineering scholarships. By submitting this application, students are considered for all the scholarships in which they meet the eligibility.
Eligibility: Grainger Engineering (including ABE & ChemE) undergraduate students who are participating in an University of Illinois approved program. *Dual major students must be enrolled in Engineering at time of study abroad. Non-Grainger CS +X students are not eligible. Independent work and independent study programs must be engineering-related and a minimum of 4 weeks. Verification required.
- Complete Two Scholarship Projects from the provided choices listed below. If you are a Global Research Scholar, one of the projects must be the Research Poster.
- Save Scholarship Projects individually using this naming convention: "TERM ABROAD_COUNTRY_NETID Project Type"
- Upload your final projects to this Box Folder
- Complete 4 hours of volunteering through IPENG sponsored events including the IPENG Education Abroad Fair and Peer Perspectives. Details will be communicated via email.
Scholarship Project Descriptions
Available for: Semester and Summer programs
Using the template provided, create a 3-minute travel guide for the location of your program. You must include at least four of your own photos from your program.
Available for: Short-Term Faculty Led, Semester, and Summer programs
Using one of the templates provided, create a personal profile of yourself that includes the following:
- A high-quality photo of yourself in your host country
- Your name and major
- Program name/location
- Term Abroad
- Your testimonial written in full sentences

Contact IPENG while abroad that you are interested in completing an Instagram Takeover and IPENG will follow up with instructions and guidelines. Following the instructions and guidelines. You will provide materials to be featured on the official IPENG Instagram (@ipeng.illinois).
60-90 Second Promotional Video
Available for: Short-Term Faculty Led, Semester, and Summer programs
Record a 60-90 second vertical promotional video for your program using our guidelines. You must edit the video to include different visuals and include as many imaged and videos from your experience as possible.
Available and Required for: Global Research Scholars applicants ONLY
Create a 3x4 feet research poster to present and display at the Engineering Research Fair and International Research Symposium held annually at the end of September and early February (exact dates will be communicated to students). IPENG will print your poster on your behalf.

| William R Miller and Martha L Behr-Miller Scholarship | A graduate from the University of Illinois, Mechanical Engineering, William Miller, spent a large part of the last eight years of his career in electro-mechanical devices working overseas. As he worked with engineers and managers in various countries, Mr. Miller discovered there was much to learn from them technologically as well as culturally. Both William and Martha firmly believe that when we have friends in other nations of the world, then we are less likely to find reasons for war and the threat of war. The Miller's strive to leave a friendlier world for future generations and feel this may be a way to help build international friendships. |
| Wert Study Abroad Scholarship | A former faculty member of Materials Science and Engineering, Charlie Wert, was a strong proponent of not only internationalization, but also strongly encouraged students to engage in an international experience abroad during their academic studies at Illinois. While Professor Wert was very interested in South America, his interests in international activities spanned the globe. |
Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
